Color! Color! Color! And a sense of harmony, of calmness, and of homecoming; this is what I strive for in my thread paintings and fiber art. My rich and intensely colorful impressionist and abstracted thread paintings are about expressing a sense of belonging, of safety, of home.
Having grown up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia, I ran away for forty years pursuing and achieving a world-class opera and musical theatre career. I came back to Bedford after my retirement and subsequent divorce to regroup and to rebuild my life in the place I love most. I began working in oil pastels and oil bars, and quickly created a way of painting with fiber and thread that gave me the textures I longed for, using the painting techniques I had developed.
My love of nature and the contrasts of land and sky are illustrated in a painterly combination of color and line. I try to draw you in and give you a sense of the majesty and the variety of the rich earth found in the Virginia countryside, a glimpse of the delectable fruits and vegetables, or of the gorgeous flora. Almost all my paintings start with nature. Some of my favorite subjects are country back roads, the sunset’s light illuminating the hills in the distance, the unusual shape of trees in shadow… all leading you to wonder what is around the corner or how the sky will change next.
In my paintings I try to recreate the emotions I feel when recalling… The sultry heat of a summer afternoon, the soft light of a misty morning across a valley or open field, the scent of the first honeysuckle blossoms, the sweet taste of the first perfectly ripe peach of summer. All of this I hope to share colored by my memories. I strive to give you a genuine sense of place while at the same time of rest, of quiet beauty, of repose.
