Drew Krecicki

After recently retiring as a managing principal of a 120-person architecture firm, I now have more time for the pursuits I enjoy most including drawing, watercolor painting, writing, kayaking, hiking, biking, and golfing.

From an early age, drawing, architecture, and marine biology shaped my interests. My favorite childhood book, “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” helped steer me toward architecture. By my junior year of high school, I had set aside my dream of becoming a marine biologist as my passion for architecture took over. I never looked back, later studying architecture at the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania.

About 20 years ago, I began watercolor painting with my mother while we searched for a shared hobby. Although she never fully embraced the medium, my interest continued to grow. I especially enjoy painting buildings, cityscapes, and marine or nautical subjects, and more recently I have focused on central Virginia and Jeffersonian architecture.

I usually paint subjects that capture my interest, particularly architecture and nautical life. Form, light, and color are central to my work, and I try to convey them in each painting. Most of my subjects come from places I have visited or experienced firsthand. I usually photograph and sketch them on site, then complete the finished watercolor in my studio.
