From pirate’s cove to dragon’s lair, jewels sparkle everywhere! The creative talents of bead artisan Steve Cunningham will be featured at C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery during the month of August. He will be at the gallery on August 1, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to share his latest creations during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.
Steve has assembled a treasure trove of jewelry, featuring pearls, crystals, and gemstones, accompanied by pirates and dragons sculpted using beads, wire, buttons, and charms. “I like to take one distinctive bead or element and let it tell me what kind of piece it wants to become,” Steve says. “Then I gather related beads and envision the structure of the piece.”
Cunningham began Bead Brothers more than 30 years ago, inspired by beaded necklaces worn by fellow disc golf players in North Carolina. He started selling beaded necklaces and earrings at the City Market and became a founding member of C’ville Arts (when it was Transient Crafters). Steve enjoys working with color and patterns and seeing what creations his imagination dreams up next.
