C’ville Arts Features – “Beauty Meets Function” - During April

Multi-talented, award-winning designer and craftsman Alex Pettigrew will be our featured artisan for the month of April. He will be at the gallery to greet you and share his latest collection on April 5th, from 5 – 7 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday celebration.

A scientist by nature and training, Alex has always loved to make things. Now that he no longer works on the molecular level, his focus is on the woodshop producing functional items from the beautiful, native, Appalachian hardwoods we’re blessed with in Central Virginia.

Alex’s primary emphasis is on functional accessories for your office and home, such as furniture, cutting and serving boards, pepper mills, clocks, cutlery, jewelry boxes, ink pens, magic wands and so much more. While continuing to use traditional woodworking techniques, Alex explores the endless world of the laser, using it both for production and to decorate his work offering a high-tech accent to offset the natural beauty of the grain itself.

Pettigrew also loves to occasionally explore purely decorative pieces which include wall art and lathe-turned sculptures. He’s a master of the fascinating world of wood and resin hybrids combining the beauty of wood with the modern, colorful contrast of polymer technology. His joy for design shines throughout his latest collection highlighting the organic beauty of wood with elements of contrast creatively arranged and designed to last a lifetime.
