Charlottesville, VA, October 22nd, 2021
Mary Whittlesey, an artist from Stanardsville, VA and third-generation knitter brings her love of relationship building and imagination to C’ville Arts during the month of November. She will be at the gallery during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday celebration on November 5th, from 5 – 7 p.m. to share her joyful cast of characters just in time for the holidays.
Mary started knitting at the age of 7 and her talent is a joy to experience. This collection of puppets inspires better relationships between adults and children. Grandparents and grandchildren build a stronger bond by playing together. When adults and children have strong relationships, both generations learn and grow with one another. When different generations grow together, they establish trust between the age groups.
This is a show about relationships. Relationship building is the process of developing social connections. Mary provides tools to help build better associations between older generations and their younger loved ones. We need healthy intergenerational bonds to promote positive outcomes for all groups involved. The tools Mary developed are puppet sets. These sets are used to generate an uplifting sense of well-being between Uncles and nieces, Aunts and nephews, Grandparents and their grandchildren, teachers and students, parents and children and so many more.
Hoping to share a little more joy this holiday season? Join the neighborhood of make believe and become a puppeteer with an animated pair of Mary’s handmade puppets. Her success over the decades reinforces the fact that when it comes to children, old-fashioned, simple toys really are one of the healthiest gifts one can give a child.
