C’ville Arts Features – “Modern in Silhouette” ~ During July

C’ville Arts is delighted to feature the designs of our talented paper cutting artist, Wendy Schultz Wubbels during the month of July. She will be at the gallery to share her inspiring new collection on July 7th from 5 to 7 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.

Wendy Schultz Wubbels, a native of Lancaster, PA has been cutting silhouette paper using only surgical scissors for over fifty years. The traditional Pennsylvania German motifs: tulips, hearts, birds, were her initial subject matter in the craft of ‘Scherenschnitte,’ literally ‘scissor cuttings’. Moving through her career, she cut the imagery of the 18th and 19th centuries: Colonial silhouettes, Windsor chairs and Shaker furniture. She sold her work at craft fairs, Shaker Museums, The Museum of American Folk Art and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Recently, inspired by Mid-Century Design, Wendy has taken her work in a new direction, presenting 20th century themes of fashion and furniture, i.e. the iconic chairs of Eames, Bertoia, Wegner and Jacobsen. A child of the 50’s and 60’s, she delights in cutting fashion silhouettes of her childhood, exploring a new range of color and texture using unique art papers.

Wendy has a degree in English literature from the College of William and Mary, has raised 4 children with her husband, Alan and together they currently operate a gardening business, Forest Lane Botanicals, from their home in Williamsburg.

C’ville Arts is the sole location for Wendy’s artwork. Samples of her work are on Facebook: WSWubbels Silhouettes and on Instagram: WSWubbels. Her email address is wswubbels@gmail.com.
