C’ville Arts Features – “Second Chances are Here” - During May

Charlottesville, VA, April 22th, 2022

Our talented tinkering guru, clockmaker and upcycling artist Allan Young, will be C’ville Arts featured artist for the month of May. He will be at the gallery on May 6th from 5 to 7 p.m. to share his latest collection of whimsical and environmentally conscious work during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.

From the beginning, Allan has enjoyed spending time taking things apart and figuring out what makes them tick. One day, he was messing around with an old computer and created a clock from the hard drive. From that moment on, he found time to tinker with all kinds of things to create his unique and functional art. Leaving his “day job” in 2007 to explore a second career as an artist was a positive move, and his life hasn’t been the same since.

Using old computer hard drives and mother boards to bicycle parts, old cameras, recycled record players, drums, old movie projectors and so much more, Allan embraces old junk and gives it a second chance, a new life in homes and offices across country. His youthful spirit and creativity are a breath of fresh air and literally helps the environment with each piece he makes.

“What I love most about this work is that … it’s not work! I love what I do! I love that I am, not only able to be creative, but I am also helping the environment by recycling old junk that would likely end up in some land fill.” Allan explains with a smile, “Every ding and dent tells a story. Re-purposing old stuff into cool new stuff is what my craft is all about.”

Allan Young is producing inventive, resourceful, one of kind pieces that convey messages from their former life and promote fresh ideas for their future. After 15 years of successful tinkering, it’s still all about the same thing, second chances in life.
