C’ville Arts features our talented fine woodworking artist, Alex Pettigrew during the month of July. He will display functional and decorative home and office accessories handcrafted from local woods. His attention to detail is easy to see, offering unique designs, with high-quality finishes. This is a show you will enjoy. Alex explains what inspires him to create such beautiful work:
I have always loved to make things. At the moment I make things primarily from wood, sometimes combined with colorful resin, occasionally adorned with high voltage electricity.
On my display you will see a variety of functional accessories for office and home such as furniture, cutting and serving boards, pepper mills, clocks, cutlery, jewelry boxes, ink pens… For my functional pieces I strive to adhere to the old Shaker dictum:
"Don't make something unless it is both made necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful."
Of late, I have also been producing pieces that are purely decorative. These include wall art and lathe-turned sculpture. I continue to explore the fascinating world of wood and resin hybrids. These combine the beauty of wood with modern, colorful polymer technology. I also strive to perfect the electrifying use of Lichtenberg figures.
